Even if you have to get up very early to experience the sunrise to the summit – the effort is worth it!
It is an unforgettable moment when the sun creeps over the clouds at 5:30. We started at 3 in the morning to get a parking lot and a space with good visibility at around 5 o’clock at the top of the Haleakala Crater. The driveway in complete darkness and the drive on twisty mountain roads is a bit exhausting, but you are compensated with a breathtaking view.
Warm clothing is compulsory – at 3.055m altitude it is very cold at night! It is best to lay several layers on top of each other.
From 5 o’clock it gets crowded at the summit – so it is important to be there early enough, if there is no more parking available due to overcrowding.
If you manage to buy something on your way to Haleakala Crater, you are lucky to have picnic shortly after sunrise on the summit. 🙂
