Everyone is always abuzz about Miami, and that’s largely due to it being a pretty buzzin’ place in its own right. People say New York is the city that never sleeps, but those that do likely never ventured as far south as Miami. It’s a city of eccentricities, an array of eclectic cuisine, miles and miles of sandy beaches, parties, museums, art, and so much more. You can’t do it all on one visit, but you can try to squeeze in as much as possible. Here are some things you shouldn’t miss out on in Miami.
Cuban cuisine – For at least one of your meals, head to legendary Versailles or any of the other incredible Cuban restaurants you’ll find throughout the city. There, you’ll find the best Cuban dishes. Try ropa vieja, a shredded beef dish that you’ll fall in love with. Or grab a classic Cuban sandwich. Make sure you get plantains on the side too. And don’t forget a Cubano, the perfect Cuban-style coffee!
A day on South Beach – It’s glitzy and ritzy but you can also have a good time on SoBe on the cheap. You just have to know what to look out for. Daytime allows for more people watching and window shopping. Plus, the many open-air restaurants often have lunch specials, making them a bit more affordable than dinner service. It’s free to walk around and be on the beach. Just buy your water before heading out there or you’ll pay a steep fee.
Ocean Drive – The Rodeo Drive of Miami! Close to South Beach in Art Déco District. Spot out where famous fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot in front of his villa “Casa Casuarina” at Ocean Drive 1116. Or just stroll around – especially at night – when all houses are lit up. To see the buildings walk on the Lummus Park side of the street. If you come to Miami, you have to go on Ocean drive. One of the most famous restaurants on this strip is Mango’s Tropical Café.
Take an Everglades adventure – This protected landscape is the only one of its kind in the world. Satisfy your need for speed and check out wildlife that you’ll only see in Florida with an airboat ride. You’ll never forget it!
Swimwear, shorts and flip flops are always acceptable – Unless you’re going to a fancy dinner service, you can go anywhere in Miami wearing you swimsuit, shorts and flip flops. It’s a laid back place where it’s too hot for anyone to dress in heavier attire.
Cool off in the Venetian Pool – This isn’t just any regular pool. It’s a historic pool that is vast in size and exquisite in beauty. Make sure you get tickets early as they only sell a limited amount per day.
Wild nightlife – Miami is perfect for celebrating life. If you can’t get on one of the exclusive VIP lists for one of the clubs, don’t worry. The hotel bars like over at the famed Delano are more fun anyway. Or enjoy a more low-key night with better drink prices and a more chill atmosphere by making your way to Liquor Lounge.
Water sports – From fishing to jet skis and everything in between, Miami will help you make a splash!
Star Island – Miami Beach’s Star Island has been the preferred address of the luxurious mansions for big celebrities like Don Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Rosie O’Donnell, etc. The artificial island provides amazing views of the city and Biscayne Bay.
